Salisbury Quakers
TRUE OR FALSE QUIZ ANSWERS

Quakers invented Quaker Oats - False
The name and picture of the Quaker was adopted by an American oat milling company
because it projected the values of honesty, integrity, purity and strength.

Quakers invented chocolate bars - True
Quakers such as the Fry's, Cadbury's and Rowntree's became chocolate merchants as, by law
in the 18th century, they were excluded from university and therefore the professions (lawyers,
doctors etc). They had to turn to trade, and the new fashion for cocoa drinking was seen as
healthy and wholesome.  In 1847, Joseph Fry invented the first solid chocolate bar, the
Cadbury's experimented, and by the 1860's, were producing the sort of chocolate we love.

Quakerism is a 'cult' - False
It's certainly not a 'cult', most of which have strict rules, beliefs, practices and exclusions.
Quakers are a very inclusive group of people.  Perhaps Quakerism could be considered a
culture, as Quakers share the values of the testimonies, though the way these are 'lived'
          are very variable.

Quakers live an austere life - False
"Not in my experience.  Simplicity is not the same as austerity.  Most of the Quakers I have met
enjoy life, love and laughter."  Quote from someone new to Quakers.

Quakers are Christians - True and False
Quakerism was started in the Christian tradition, but believing that people could speak
and listen to God directly without the need for the church hierarchy.  Quakerism today is
        inclusive of many different perspectives

Quakers 'punch above their weight' - True and False
False, as Quakers believe in non-violent means of conflict resolution, and don't punch,
but it is true that Quakers exert significant influence. For example, a group of only 7
people work at the United Nations in Geneva but are highly trusted for their integrity and
diplomacy, and as such have been able to broker important relationships and dialogue.

Quakers don't drink alcohol - False
Quakers come from all sorts of backgrounds and represent a wide range of beliefs and
practises.  As in society as a whole, some people choose not to drink, others enjoy it from
time to time.  We do try to think carefully about the use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco and
their effect on individuals,  families and societies.

Quakers always wear sober clothing - False
Probably true up to the 19th century, definitely not now!

 Postscripts:
How do Quakers sing hymns? ........Very slowly as they're always reading the next line to see if
          they believe it or not.
